As the owner of a pit/lab mix, and not allowing them into doggie daycare is discrimination.
My dog is socialized, neutered and is not aggressive. I have had problems finding dog walkers as well as kennels to board him because of this discrimination. Dogs are a reflection of their owners. Owners who train their dogs, socialize them, treat them as part of the family tend to not own 'bully' breeds - but some of us do! If statistics were all we had to go on then they would ban cocker spaniels, as they are the dog most likely to bite. All dogs deserve a chance to be judged as an individual - not lumped into a category with dogs bred to fight or be aggressive. It is guilt by association.

....I would have to say discerning...we cannot even get our dacshund Bear near the kennel without his shots, etc, and the fact is - Dachunds have major attitude!

Municiplaities and insurance companies in a good number of the states agree on the liabilities associated with certain breeds of canines.

I am not saying it is right, but there are some mnumbers out there on the insurance side to bear this out if you poke around a bit.

What a shame to hear this news! Bark Park has been so wonderful in the past - my Yorkie, Chocolate, has absolutely loved being there. He hasn't had a chance to visit for over a year now (when the facility expanded into the warehouse next door), we'll have to find a new place when we travel this summer. Thanks for the heads up!

Djuna, thanks for visiting me. I've just discovered your blog and I'll be marking it so I can check it out each day. You've covered some interesting matters and I'm fascinated with the idea of a real estate agent who has such a good understanding of the needs of dog owners.
If I were changing houses it would be a vital question I would ask. For instance, where I live in Melbourne in Australia, our suburb, quite near the centre of a city of nearly 4 million people, is famous for having deadly snakes all over the place. People are paying huge prices to live here because my street runs down to a cliff that overlooks a parkland but they don't stop to ask what is the death-rate of dogs living along that cliff-top. I'll bet if you were the estate agent here you'd tell them! It's huge!

That sounds like a good idea. I think I'll try it. I've often thought of a doggy compost, as I compost every other carbon-based bit of waste in our household, but didn't know how to go about it. It's the idea of the septic starter that sounds interesting. I'll have to see if I can get that here in Oz. I'm intending to mention your good idea on my own blog. I hope that is okay.

grrrrr... growl... cici does not like being profiled... she is part Dalmatian, part pit bull... and the sweetest girl dog in the world... almost every day at dog parks and other places there are all kinds of dogs who are not friendly, to say the least, and yes, it is the owners, irresponsible owners, who make the difference between a 'good' dog and a 'bad' dog... there are many myths that are simply not true... some pit bulls are K9 workers and heroes... and many people would not recognize a pit bull if their life depended upon it...

I agree with David. It's all about how you train your dog and it's socialization. If you don't train it or properly socialize it, something bad is bound to happen. Heck, you could put a Chihuahua on the list, if it's not properly taken care of.

Sounds to me that insurance companies are looking for yet another way to increase premiums. Anyone that knows & understand dog know that it how the human treats the animal that determines how the dog will act in our society. If we have dogs lists as "biting breeds" it's because we made them that way.
