Half Moon Bay State Beach

Blufftop Coastal State Park

Bucky and I went to Half Moon Bay today for a walk along the beach. We went to Blufftop Coastal State Beach which is located about 0.8 mile south of the CA 92 junction. From CA1 turn west onto Poplar. Drive west on Poplar about 0.6 mile to the parking lot at the end of the road. There are no parking or entrance fees.

Despite the fact that the Half Moon Bay State Beach website says that dogs and horses are not allowed on the beach, I saw both. It was a beautiful morning at the beach. Dogs were frolicking, birds were soaring and the waves were pounding. There is a 3 mile blufftop trail with paved trails and scenic views. A sandy, steep path leads to the ocean. Like Fort Funston if you want to walk on the beach, check the tide table. The surf was so high this morning that it was pounding against the cliffs and there was little room to walk.

Half Moon Bay State Beach

Although Fort Funston is my favorite dog beach, Half Moon Bay is a close second.  After walking on the beach, it is fun to go into the town of Half Moon Bay and get some coffee or a bite to eat.  The city is dog friendly and it is easy to find a place to sit outside with your pooch. Half Moon Bay is a nice little getaway if you live on the Peninsula. Our entire trip including breakfast took only a few hours but it felt like a big adventure.
